What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to witness again a defining event from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.
So, What's in the Case?
Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how Will was possessed by the entity in the past.
The Power of Fear
Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the series finale to come.
