Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.
One snub was enough. Another and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to realize that claiming the World Cup trophy demands help from the talented midfielder, even if it is also Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the tactical structures and player rankings necessary with England now that he is returned to the manager's warm embrace.
Tuchel desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Personal talent matters but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a price to pay when celebrity dominates. Still, a point has been made.
The midfielder was given food for thought after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed England book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He saw the young talent excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel discuss appreciating the group’s energy and values. Naturally, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for his club against Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have put his tournament chances precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than teammates. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has shown him that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after showing that he is willing to make big calls.
“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham just has that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he has. We all need to help him and build an environment where he can [have] his drive in matches and for the objectives we are building as a team.”
The star dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring coaching. He has not played for the national team since March and has found it hard to perform well this year but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his display in his club's victory versus the German side this week.
The issue, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by forcing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it hurts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this idea regarding him for a long time. In my view it suits him the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, it's unclear.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a particular setup, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
The manager discussed one star bursting through for easy finishes and Foden netting goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to score in a friendly win against Scotland in over a year ago to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a sense of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to begin against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be watching him carefully. Set aside the ego outside. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an even better one.
