The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final place.
At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
The midfielder is the latest to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and determination he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
