The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, featuring a substantial range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
