LinkedIn Engagement Surge: Women Discover Better Results By Pretending to be Male Users

Are your professional networking followers viewing you as a thought leader? Are hordes of respondents applauding your insights on expanding your business? Do recruiters making contact to explore collaborations?

Should that not be the case, the explanation might be your gender.

The Experiment: Modifying Gender Identity for Increased Reach

Dozens of women joined an organized LinkedIn experiment recently following viral posts indicated that switching their profile gender to "man" boosted their platform visibility.

Some participants rewrote their profiles to incorporate what they termed "bro-coded" terminology - inserting action-focused professional jargon like "propel", "revolutionize" and "expedite". Anecdotally, their visibility also improved.

Algorithmic Bias Concerns Brought Up

The engagement increase has caused some to wonder whether an inherent sexism in the platform's system prioritizes men who use professional networking terminology.

Like most major networking sites, LinkedIn employs an algorithm to decide which posts appear to which members - boosting some while suppressing others.

Platform Response

Through a blog post, LinkedIn acknowledged the trend but stated it does not factor in "personal characteristics" when determining post visibility. Rather, the company mentioned that "numerous factors" influence how posts are received.

Modifying profile gender on your profile does not affect how your content shows up in search or feed.

Personal Experiences

Simone Bonnett, who modified her gender identifiers to "male pronouns" and her profile name to "Simon E", reported extraordinary results.

"The statistics I'm observing show a sixteen-fold rise in visitor traffic and a 1,300% increase in impressions," she noted.

Megan Cornish, a marketing expert, started testing after observing her reach decline significantly.

The Method

  • First, she changed her profile gender to "man"
  • Subsequently, she used AI tools to rewrite her profile using "male-coded" wording
  • Lastly, she recycled old posts with similar "agentic" language

The result was immediate: a more than fourfold rise in visibility within seven days.

The Negative Aspect

Although the positive results, Cornish voiced dissatisfaction with the approach.

"Previously, my content were more personal - concise and insightful, but also warm and relatable," she stated. "Now, the masculine version was forceful and confident - similar to a Caucasian man being overly confident."

She discontinued the experiment after seven days, stating "Every day I persisted, and outcomes improved, I became angrier."

Mixed Results

Some testers experienced positive results. One writer who changed both her profile gender to "male" and her ethnicity to "Caucasian" described a decrease in reach and engagement.

"We know there's algorithmic bias, but it's extremely difficult to understand how it operates in particular situations or the reasons behind it," she remarked.

Wider Consequences

These experiments coincide with ongoing conversations about LinkedIn's unique role as both a business platform and social space.

Recent changes in the past few months have apparently resulted in female creators experiencing markedly lower visibility, leading to unofficial tests where the same content by male and female users received dramatically unequal audience engagement.

Technical Explanation

According to LinkedIn, the network uses AI systems to classify and distribute content based on various elements, including post content and the member's career profile.

The company states it frequently assesses its systems, including "examinations of inequalities based on gender."

Company representative suggested that recent declines in some users' reach might originate from higher volume due to additional posts on the network.

Evolving Environment

According to a tester noted, "masculine-oriented language" appears to be growing on the network.

"People often view LinkedIn as more professional and polished," she commented. "This is evolving. It's becoming increasingly aggressive and unpredictable."
