The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
