Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
The economist declared he would withdraw from public duties after legislative body made public his regular communications with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their advancement".

The prominent academic, who once presided over Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected human trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it accepted Summers' decision to resign.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the governing body," the company commented.

Political Context

This development follows after the entire Congress of Congress decided on this week to endorse a bill that would compel the US justice department to release its records on the case.

The legislation will afterward proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. He has said he expects to sign the measure, after modifying his position on the issue following objections from his base.

Email Contents

A collection of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the Congressional committee last week mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The communications revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to link Summers to influential world leaders.

Personal Response

After the correspondence were made available with the public, Summers stated he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to persist in interacting with the financier".

He continued that he desired "to rebuild trust and repair connections with the persons closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He presided over Harvard from five years and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his departure from public duties recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a liberal policy institute in the capital where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that he was not affiliated with the group.

The former official became part of the directorate of the AI company, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
