A trio of officers perished and at least 15 others were hurt in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as police and firefighters approached the property close to the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and a third person who escaped after the blast was found soon after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene displayed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, explained the property was facing an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents triggered the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The official was convinced the detonation had occurred on a floor above the access point and stated to the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the explosion, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, noting that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
