Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last hole.

That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.

Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
